Also The Compleat Jockey; Containing Methods for the Training Horses up for Racing, with their Heats and Courses, and Manner of Keeping, &c. Also, Instructions to avoid being Cheated by Horse-Coursers. To which is Added, in this Seventeenth Impression, Directions to preserve all sorts of Cattle, from all manner of Diseaes, and to feed Cattle Fat, without Corn, Hay, or Grass. 4to. 21 x 17 cm. Engraved extra title, (6), 336, iii, i, 22, 39, (1) pp. Illustrated with woodcuts, 4 of which full-page. Later (20th century) calfspine with gilt spine with red label and marbled boards. Stains, browning and dampstains. Worming, mostly fine and in margins, but occasionally with slight losses of print. The engraved extra titel mounted and with some minor losses.

17th edition of this work, which was originally published in 1610. Gervase (or Jervis or Jarvis) Markham, born around 1568, dead 1637, soldier, scholar and professional author, said to be Britain's first 'hackney' or hack writer. He is also said to have been the first to import an arab horse to England. Scorned by contemporaries, he nevertheless published several books on husbandry, horsmanship, horticulture etc. appearing in new editions well into the 18th century.
