Engraved frontispiece and extra title with engraved vignette by Phiz (H. K. Browne, browned), 37 engraved plates (lacking 4 plates, partly foxed, 4 harder, 2 by Buss , 6 by Seymour, 4 unsigned and the rest by Phiz [H. K. Browne]).
Contemporary black half calf, somewhat worn, mended in the joints, gilt spine in five compartments, some mendings at head and foot, marbled edges. Partly some foxing, mostly in the inner margin.
Eckel pp. 56-57; Smith I:3. First issue, first printing of the book edition. Plates in a mixed state.
Frontispiece in the first state, "Veller" instead of "Weller" on the title page, title dated 1837. Page 25 with signature "E", the "F" in "OF"imperfect in the headline on p. 432.
