Small 4:o (about 238x169 mm.). (16, including engraved title, 1-400 (lacks pp. 157-158), (64) pp. Engraved title (close cut, damages in inner part, inkstain in upper margin, some foxing), engraved dedication, 17 engraved plates, numerous engraved vignettes, woodcut initials and headpieces.
Contemporary vellum, worn and spotted, cracks in the joints, darkened blank spine with small damages, new inner doublures and endpapers. Upper margin partly with inkstain, harder up to pp. 149, some foxing and spotting.
First edition. 229 numbered emblems, printed one to a page (lacks number CIV-CV on pp. 157-158), 17 plates of the Trinity, the Virtues and other allegorical figures, and the Annunciation.
The emblem subjects are drawn from the bible, classical mythology, other emblem collections, and events and buildings from the time of Pope Gregory XIII's reign, all with the dragon or serpent of his coat-of-arms. There are also several views of Bologna, his birthplace.
